Response to Brief

The first film I remember watching which really scared me was E.T when I was around the age of 5 and I still can't watch it without getting a little freaked out. After watching it, I would imagine the alien being underneath my bed or creeping around me whilst I was sleeping. I think the first real horror movie I watched completely was The Woman In Black, when I was 12, which scared me so much that I couldn't go anywhere by myself at night around my house for fears of seeing her face.

My feelings on the horror genre in general is that if it has anything to do with the dead or ghosts, I will most likely freak out- apart from the Paranormal Activity set. However, I can easily watch gory movies such as Saw and I enjoy watching American Horror Story as I know that the content is all just makeup and effects. Even though the ghost- type horror movies may also be made up, there's always been apart of me that does fear spirits or the feeling of there being another presence in the room so I think that's what makes me react the way I do towards those type of horrors.

The things that actually get me scared in a horror movie is the sound or voice of the 'scary thing'. For example, in an English lesson, my class watched The Babadook and because there was always a specific way the name would be said, it genuinely stuck with me and freaked me out.
The kind of horror trailers and posters which interest me are the ones that don't give too much of the plot away (as most trailers do); trailers that show that the movie has a link with something possibly going on in society at that time. One of the best horror movies I've watched and enjoyed is Get Out which is based on a big problem, in the US especially, tackling racism.

I might want to create a horror trailer and poster about something which personally scares me, like paranormal type horror as those type of films successfully effect audiences in a way where they feel frightened. In addition to that, I feel as though if I create something that I personally am afraid of, it will get me more used to that type of genre of horror movies.

I am most excited about exploring how horror films are created and what there is to know about producing a good quality horror that successfully frightens audiences. I mostly want to take this course and learn to understand the construction behind horror movies so much that I no longer get scared from watching them. I'm also looking forward to being able to create my own horror trailer, magazine front cover page and poster as I will get to know more about effects and SFX makeup which will obviously be contributing a lot to how scary the construction work would be.
